RSS – Really Simple Syndication – Simplified

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.  The simple part is in how we can use it without really understanding exactly how it happens in the background.  The best comparison is to a press release.  When a press release is prepared and released through a network designed just for that purpose, you don’t really have to know how the network functions, just that your release will get to all desired destinations.

Well, RSS is like that.  It is a technology that distributes blog posts or web content automatically throughout the Internet, usually within minutes of its publication on the Web.  It’s called a Feed.  When you blog, your blog will have one or more RSS feeds.  This is a special URL address that allows others to subscribe and receive your content automatically.

They receive the content in a feed reader, most of which are absolutely free.  I can link you to some, but if you’re a Gmail or other Google service user, their Reader is easy and fast to get going.  Yahoo has one, and there are a number of free ones you can locate with a “feed reader” search on the Web.  When it comes to blogging, you don’t have to shout to be heard round the world.
