Getting WordPress Post Excerpts Right

This post came about due to a problem with this theme (The New Yorker) and the fact that it blew up columns when I inserted large images or videos into posts. You can see that this theme, patterned after the New York Times website, has a number of narrow columns. As long as I stuck to text and small images, I was fine.
